Tigers will see Jack Leiter of the Rangers make his debut.

Since selecting Jack Leiter with the second overall pick in the 2021 draft, the Texas Rangers have been anticipating his presence in the rotation. Now that day has come. On Thursday afternoon in Detroit, during the penultimate game of a four-game series, Leiter will make his major league debut against the Tigers. Leiter recorded a 3.77 ERA in 14 1/3 innings, striking out 25 and walking only three, earning him a call-up from Triple-A Round Rock. Bruce Bochy, the manager of Texas, stated, “He’s been throwing the ball down there very well.” What an excellent time to give him a call—he’s been throwing good and has once more proven that he deserves this.

I told him that we would need him when he left for spring training because I liked the way he was pitching. Very early in the season, I don’t think anyone anticipated that we would make the adjustments that we have already. However, Leiter really showed up at the end and started tossing strikes, giving orders, and other things. It will be interesting to see him. Bochy brought up a few injuries from early in the season. After winning his first three starts, Cody Bradford was added to the disabled list along with three other rotation players: Tyler Mahle, Max Scherzer, and Jacob de Grom.

After starring at Vanderbilt, Leiter—the son of former major league All-Star Al Leiter—joined the Rangers for a $7.9 million signing bonus. He didn’t exactly breeze through the minors, though. The right-hander, 23, made 23 appearances (22 starts) for Double-A Frisco in 2022, recording a 3-10 record and a 5.54 ERA. In 20 starts last season, he went a combined 2-6 with a 5.19 ERA, primarily at the Double-A level. “Obviously, it’s pitching, but it’s nothing like what I went through my first two years in the minor leagues,” Leiter told the Dallas Morning News. “I had some shaky starts (at Vanderbilt).” “I sincerely appreciate it. People were telling me, “It’s going to get better,” even as I was going through it.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Leiter stated, “I had some rough starts (at Vanderbilt) obviously, it’s pitching, but nothing like what I went through my first two years in the minor leagues.” “I sincerely appreciate it. People were telling me “it’s going to make you better, it’s going to make you better” even as I was going through it.” Detroit will start the final game of an eight-game homestand against Kenta Maeda (0-1, 6.00 ERA). Maeda, who signed with the Tigers as a free agency during the winter, will be making his fourth start. His most recent performance came on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins.

Although it’s evident that we didn’t play clean, mistakes make it difficult to see on the scoreboard, according to Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “That was today. And they exploited every mistake. We were not allowed to get away with it. That was the distinction. Every time we committed an error, they scored, and in a game decided by one run, every detail counts.”
