Once more trading up, the Lions choose LSU DT Mekhi Wingo at pick No. 189.

Day 3 saw Detroit make their third draft move; earlier on Saturday afternoon, they had traded up for two offensive players. Detroit traded the 189th pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for picks 205 and 249 in order to advance. Mekhi Wingo was selected by Detroit to strengthen their defensive line unit after an exciting first round of the draft. A league scouting report states that although Wingo is a little undersized, his t  is entertaining to watch. He can swiftly separate and play off of lateral blocks since he is a powerful, compact player. He is seldom dominated, however occasionally he can be overpowered by bulk or length. He can outpace opponents and obliterate their landmarks with his first-step quickness and processing.

Earlier on Day 3, Detroit traded up to draft both running back Sione Vaki and offensive tackle Giovanni Manu in an effort to strengthen the attack. Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw join a cornerback group that is expected to see a significant increase in production this coming season as Detroit upgraded their secondary with their first two draft selections. If no trades are made, Detroit will make another selection shortly, this time at No. 210 overall in the sixth round.
