Report: Competition exists for Liverpool to sign a highly regarded English goalkeeper.

The Anfield club’s pursuit of Sunderland shot-stopper Anthony Patterson is expected to draw interest from Sheffield United, so Liverpool’s summer goal of finding a trustworthy backup goalie will not be easy.

Although Alisson Becker is without a doubt the team’s best player, current backup Caoimhin Kelleher is anticipated to depart this summer, and it is unclear if seasoned Adrian will be given a new contract when his one expires in the coming months. The Reds are thus looking for a new goalkeeper. Patterson has drawn interest from multiple Premier League teams, including Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Patterson has impressed since taking over as Sunderland’s first-choice keeper midway through the 2021/22 League One season. But now Sheffield United, who were just demoted, are involved.

SHEFFIELD UNITED WANT PATTERSON AS THEIR NEW GOALKEEPER

Journalist Alan Nixon writes (via Patreon) that the Blades are prepared to put up a challenge for Liverpool in the form of an ambitious offer of approximately £8 million for Patterson’s signature.

According to Nixon, Sheffield United’s interest shows that they are determined to bolster their roster in advance of their Championship campaign after being demoted from the Premier League. The Blades’ defensive problems, which include a Premier League season in which a record-breaking 101 goals were conceded, must be addressed, particularly in light of the fact that January acquisition Ivo Grbic has not impressed in goal and that former number one Wes Foderingham’s contract is about to expire. WOLVES ATTIRED IN KELLEHER AND PATTERSON There are other suitors circling, even if the Yorkshire club seems to be the most serious. In a similar vein, Wolves see Patterson as a possible Jose Sa substitute, while they are still considering other options like Aaron Ramsdale and Kelleher of Liverpool.

Patterson will have a difficult time negotiating because the Black Cats are reportedly looking for a deal that would pay him closer to £15 million. Furthermore, Patterson’s new long-term contract, signed last summer and tying him to the team through 2028, is the only thing that has committed him to the Stadium of Light.
