Report: Unexpected return to Liverpool ISN’T the knock on Jurgen Klopp some think it is

Julian Ward has rejoined Liverpool, marking his fourth reunion there since 2024. It’s hardly the statement on Jurgen Klopp that some think it is, however.

Julian Ward is currently involved with Liverpool FC again. The Athletic, who clarified that he will assume the position of Technical Director at FSG, said as much. He is the most recent of several players to return to the team, the most notable being Michael Edwards. Edwards was Ward’s boss at Liverpool before Ward assumed Edwards’ position as sporting director in 2022. But after a year, Ward resigned, and some find it revealing that he’s returned. After all, as Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool, here are some previous staff members returning to the team. In recent times, the German authority, especially concerning transfers, has been scrutinized closely. There are others who argue that it was excessive and that the results  are a sign that they didn’t want to work with Klopp.

THE EXIT OF JURGEN KLOPP

One point in particular has to be noted: Edwards and Ward will not be playing their original roles. They’re not even going back to Liverpool, technically. Both are employed by FSG and are in charge of the organization’s overall football project. That’s not limited to Liverpool anymore, as Edwards will be in charge of the shift to a multi-club initiative. Therefore, Edwards and Ward aren’t just stepping back in now that Klopp isn’t around. To start with, Edwards knew full well that the German was going to go, but he still turned down Liverpool on several occasions earlier this year. What ultimately convinced him—and most likely Ward—was the prospect of a significant promotion and a new position.
