Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has acknowledged the challenge of surpassing Alisson Becker, widely regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Kelleher, who has been with Liverpool since 2015, has found it difficult to secure regular playing time due to Alisson’s exceptional form and reputation.

“Playing against Man City at home was a significant experience for me due to the rivalry between our teams,” Kelleher said. “You can’t find a more high-profile game in world football, and I felt I performed very well. It made me realize that I’m capable of playing at this level every week. I got a taste for it, and now I want to do it consistently. My main goal is to become a No. 1 goalkeeper.”

Kelleher confirmed that he plans to discuss his future with incoming manager Arne Slot this summer. “There will be some discussions over the coming weeks,” he explained. “The club has been occupied with the manager’s departure and the appointment of a new one. With the new staff coming in, those talks will take place.”

Reflecting on his time at Liverpool, Kelleher expressed his gratitude and love for the club. “I’ve had such an amazing time at Liverpool. It’s been a crazy journey for me and one that I’ve absolutely loved. I love the club, I love the fans, and I have a great relationship with the players and the staff. Whether it’s here at Liverpool or somewhere else, I do feel the next step for me is to be a No. 1.”

Last season, Kelleher made 26 appearances due to Alisson’s injury struggles. He told The Athletic that he has no desire to spend another season as the second-choice goalkeeper. “It was the first time in my career that I’d had a spell like that, and I loved it,” he said. “I thrived on it. I’d been waiting for a moment like that. It was a massive opportunity for me to be Liverpool’s No 1 for that long.”

Liverpool has been linked with a move for Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, who has recently expressed his interest in a summer transfer. This potential acquisition further complicates Kelleher’s prospects of becoming Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper.

In summary, Kelleher’s ambition to secure regular playing time as a first-choice goalkeeper is clear, even if it means leaving Liverpool. He has enjoyed his time at the club but recognizes the need to take the next step in his career, whether at Liverpool or elsewhere.
