Mathieu Betts’ adaptability significantly boosts his chances of securing a spot on the Lions’ 53-man roster.

Although it’s still early in the offseason, Mathieu Betts has caught the eye of coach Dan Campbell with his performance. Having participated in only a month of padless practices in Detroit, Betts has already impressed Campbell.

“We’re in pajamas, but there’s more versatility to this guy than I think I even realized,” Campbell remarked.

The Lions were aware of Betts’ prowess as a pass rusher. However, injuries to players like Marcus Davenport and James Houston have given Betts the chance to work with the first and second-team defense. Campbell has utilized this opportunity to challenge Betts with unfamiliar tasks, particularly those associated with Detroit’s SAM linebacker position, such as dropping into coverage. Betts has responded positively so far.

“There are a couple of things we’re doing in coverage with him that weren’t his focus in the CFL. He just pursued the quarterback,” Campbell said. “We’re asking him to take on some responsibilities at the SAM linebacker position, where he not only rushes but also drops into coverage and matches up a bit. I’ll tell you what, he’s got pretty good hips for a big man, and he can run. He’s smart too.”

The Lions have a significant need for someone in the situational SAM role. Last year, with Houston sidelined for much of the season, the team rotated players like Julian Okwara, Derrick Barnes, and Jack Campbell without finding a consistent fit. If Betts can quickly develop his skills in this area, he could realistically compete for a roster spot alongside Houston, a productive pass rusher who has struggled with the other SAM linebacker responsibilities.

Additionally, Betts offers special teams potential, which is valuable for players with limited roles.

“There’s some versatility there. And special teams, yes sir,” Campbell added.

Betts won’t secure a position in June alone. When training camp starts, he’ll need to demonstrate that his pass-rushing skills are effective against NFL talent and continue improving in coverage. For now, he’s making a strong impression on the coaching staff.
