Astonish: in yesterday game Kodai Senga injury, Mets ace’s dominant return cut short

Kodai Senga’s injury-plagued season debut for the New York Mets was cut short after 5 1/3 innings and 73 pitches on Friday night when he strained his left calf while pitching against the Atlanta Braves. Senga gestured toward Pete Alonso and started running off the mound to make room for the first baseman. The 31-year-old right-hander grabbed his left calf and bounced for a few steps before collapsing.

Surrounded by manager Carlos Mendoza, athletic trainer, catcher Francisco Alvarez, and his interpreter, Senga held his calf. After massaging his leg, Senga stood up, shook hands and gave embraces to his teammates on the infield, then hobbled away. Senga, who missed the first 102 games due to an injury in his right shoulder capsule, gave up just two hits, including a two-run home run by Adam Duvall in the second inning, and struck out nine batters. He struck out his last ten batters.Senga, who signed a $75 million, five-year contract after finishing second to Arizona’s Corbin Carroll for NL Rookie of the Year the previous season, finished 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA in 29 appearances. Senga started a minor league rehab assignment on July 3 and completed four starts for Triple-A Syracuse and Class A Brooklyn, going 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA.
