The Green Bay Packers feel that new coordinator Jeff Hafley will improve their defense’s ability to make more big plays. Any training camp with a new coordinator frequently includes a lot of rhetoric about how much better things will be under the new leader. However, the Green Bay Packers insist that their strong backing for new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is genuine. Not just the defensive guys are complimenting him. “According to the offensive linemen and other offensive players, the defense looks very different,” defensive lineman Kenny Clark stated. “It is encouraging.”

He came to rebuild a defense that had failed to meet expectations based on the Packers’ draft picks. The early evidence indicate that Hafley is making an impact. After each Packers session, either the offense or defense must perform pushups, depending on which unit fared worst. Clark pointed out that the defense has only had to do pushups once thus far. “I really appreciate the buy-in.”
During the first week of training camp, the defense was the standout unit, especially while starting quarterback Jordan Love was absent due to contract negotiations. Since Love returned to practice on Saturday after signing a four-year, $220 million extension, the offense has shown improvement, but the defense continues to make impactful plays.
“The defense has done a great job of mixing up looks,” Love commented. “They never give you the same look twice in a row. Their ability to mix things up is impressive.
The safeties are always on the move, making everything appear the same with their pressures and disguises. They’ll show pressure and then drop out, which creates a mental challenge for the quarterback to figure out what they’re doing.”
Jeff Hafley, the new defensive coordinator, is replacing Joe Barry, who was let go after three seasons following the Packers’ 24-21 loss to San Francisco in the NFC divisional playoffs. Hafley has introduced a new approach, transitioning the defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 formation.
“I played in this defense during my third year with the Raiders,” said cornerback Keisean Nixon. “We made the playoffs with that system, and this team is even more talented than the one I played with three years ago.”
The Packers have consistently had talent on defense. Last season, they featured eight former first-round picks: Kenny Clark, Jaire Alexander, Devonte Wyatt, Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Quay Walker, Eric Stokes, and Darnell Savage. Savage has since moved to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the other seven first-round picks remain with the team.
