Sean Payton, the coach of the Denver Broncos, has undoubtedly contributed to the good spin campaign surrounding quarterback Zach Wilson, the former bust of the New York Jets. However, Wilson’s position in Denver as a backup, third quarterback, or even on the roster following Bo Nix’s promotion has not been solidified despite the praise. The Denver Post reported on Wednesday that Payton stated, “That room has been terrific.” This came the day after an interview in which Payton described Wilson as “excellent” over the previous two weeks came to light. “When we enter the roster, we have some difficult choices to make.” The Post claims that this also applies to the remaining quarterbacks, whose fates are in doubt. The 12th overall choice in the 2024 draft, Nix, is expected by the Broncos to be their starting quarterback, departing
Jarrett Stidham and Wilson competing for a spot on the NFL roster and the backup slot. There were three throws today where Wilson was on a little bit of a hot, according to Payton’s addition of Wilson on Wednesday, as reported by the Post. It really was amazing. In April, the Jets dealt Wilson, their second-round pick in 2021, to the Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2024. In the preseason, Wilson completed 2 of 6 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers after going 10 of 13 for 117 yards against the Indianapolis Colts in the first game. How much of a role he plays in Sunday’s conclusion is unknown. Wilson made 34 appearances (33 starts) but never showed
the ability to start in the NFL, where he has a 12-21 record, and be a quarterback of NFL talent. Throughout his career, he has completed 57% of his throws for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions while throwing. Payton will come clean by the deadline of August 27.
