Practice squad tracker for the Detroit Lions: Who is returning for a closer inspection?
After claiming linebacker Trevor Nowaske off waivers on Wednesday, the Detroit Lions finally have a 53-man roster. The
active roster is a dynamic, ever-evolving group, so once they made their initial roster cuts, those players were free to be added back to the practice squad or even the 53-man roster. As the initial roster cuts waiver process came to an end on Wednesday at noon ET, teams began assembling their practice squads. Let’s review some essential elements of the league’s practice squad regulations before discussing the players the Lions will have on their practice squad come football season.
A maximum of 16 players from each NFL team may be included on the practice squad; of those, up to six may be occupied by players with two or more years of NFL experience. This year, a player from the International Player Pathway Program may occupy the 17th practice squad place. Throughout the season, any member of the practice squad may be promoted to the active roster three times in total. After that, they must be placed on waivers or signed to the active roster. Every week, each team is permitted to elevate two players from the practice squad; if a player clears waivers after the third elevation, their total number of elevations is reset.
