Many fans and commentators have referred to this season—like last—as the New York Jets’ “win now” season. Although previous seasons have been compared to this one, something feels different this year. The team has a really strong roster for once, even though a few important players have just suffered injuries. Not just observers and supporters believe that this team is prepared for victory. Joe Douglas, the general manager of the New York Jets, actually stated as much during a press conference last week.

Although it would be simple to dismiss this as standard GM jargon, I’m not sure I would. Up until now, Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh have mostly succeeded in maintaining the backing of the team’s ownership and supporters by presenting a positive outlook for the future rather than real on-field successes. Douglas is officially stating with this quotation that winning games is now the main objective and that simply getting better is no longer sufficient. That’s as much of a “win now” statement as you’re going to get from this general manager, which likely indicates a lot about Douglas’ faith in the team as it is. Fans now only need to pray that his confidence is well-founded because, if it is, this sounds like a playoff game.
