BBC report: Public speaks out on Outlook swimming pool closure.. see more

The closure of public swimming pools has become a pressing concern in various communities, with residents voicing their apprehensions over the loss of these vital facilities. In Outlook, the local swimming pool’s closure has elicited significant public outcry. Residents have expressed their dissatisfaction, emphasizing the pool’s importance to the community.

This situation is not unique to Outlook. Across the UK, numerous public swimming pools have faced closures due to a combination of factors. A BBC investigation revealed that in the three years leading up to March 2022, 65 public pools were shut down, either temporarily or permanently. The reasons for these closures range from rising operational costs and staff shortages to chemical supply issues.

For instance, the Peterborough Lido, an iconic Art Deco facility that has been a community staple since 1936, is at risk of closure due to escalating operational expenses, estimated at around £400,000 annually. The local council has proposed a temporary shutdown to devise a sustainable management strategy, a move that has been met with resistance from residents who fear the loss of a cherished community asset.

The repercussions of these closures extend beyond mere inconvenience. Swimming pools play a crucial role in public health, offering spaces for exercise, rehabilitation, and essential life-saving skills. The closure of these facilities could lead to a decline in swimming proficiency, particularly among children, and a subsequent increase in water-related accidents. Moreover, public pools often serve as community hubs, fostering social interaction and cohesion.

The underlying causes of these closures are multifaceted. Rising energy costs have significantly increased the financial burden on pool operators. Additionally, a national chlorine shortage has forced some pools to shut down temporarily. Factors contributing to this shortage include reduced production in China, supply chain disruptions due to global events, and regulatory challenges stemming from Brexit.

In response to these challenges, industry bodies and local communities are advocating for increased government support to ensure the survival of public swimming pools. They emphasize the importance of these facilities in promoting public health, safety, and community well-being. The situation in Outlook mirrors a broader national issue, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts to preserve these essential community resources.
