Liverpool is “cleared” to add a midfield player as their primary opponent is priced out.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners has received a significant lift, with the leading contender now reportedly unable to meet the asking price. Following their elimination from the Europa League at the hands of Koopmeiners and his Atalanta teammates, Liverpool has been consistently linked with the midfielder.

As Jürgen Klopp prepares to bid farewell to Anfield after his final match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, incoming manager Arne Slot will soon take charge, marking a new era for the club. Despite significant midfield investments last summer, including the acquisitions of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endō, additional reinforcements are deemed necessary due to the toll of a congested fixture schedule. Departures, including that of Thiago Alcântara, are anticipated, potentially clearing the path for Liverpool to pursue Koopmeiners.

Reports indicate that Juventus, previously considered the frontrunner, has been priced out of contention with a fee of $65m (£51m/€60m). Liverpool has reportedly engaged in preliminary discussions with Koopmeiners and his representatives. While the asking price is substantial, it is within reach for Liverpool, particularly with potential departures freeing up funds. Koopmeiners’ versatility across midfield roles adds appeal, although Liverpool may prioritize a specialist defensive presence depending on their midfield needs.
