I was a Liverpool player, and approving the transfer of a $108 million star would be completely insane.

Glen Johnson has strongly advised Liverpool against considering the departure of a certain underrated talent this summer, amidst swirling transfer speculations. As Liverpool braces for significant changes, Johnson has cautioned against overlooking a crucial player as the club transitions into a new era.

Despite rumors linking players like Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz with moves away, Liverpool’s recent successes under Jürgen Klopp highlight the solid foundation already in place for incoming manager Arne Slot. The responsibility of addressing such transfer decisions falls largely on the shoulders of the revamped recruitment team, led by Michael Edwards and comprising Richard Hughes, Julian Ward, and David Woodfine.

Johnson, who served as Liverpool’s right-back from 2009 to 2015, has emphasized the importance of retaining Núñez, labeling it as “absolutely bonkers” to consider selling the striker. He lauds Núñez’s contributions to the team, highlighting his youth, creativity, and underrated role, while also acknowledging his recent scoring drought in the Premier League.

While Johnson’s stance may seem forceful, Liverpool.com acknowledges the validity of his point. The resurgence of data-focused experts within the club could potentially bolster Núñez’s case, given his strong statistical performance. However, there’s uncertainty surrounding whether Núñez will experience the anticipated breakthrough in form. Despite this, Johnson advocates for giving Núñez the opportunity to thrive under Slot’s management, suggesting that a reset could be the catalyst for his resurgence.
