Why Arne Slot was named head coach rather than manager of Liverpool

Liverpool have confirmed that Arne Slot will be taking over from Jurgen Klopp, but with a different job title. While Klopp served as the manager, Slot will assume the role of head coach, becoming the 23rd person to lead the team from the Anfield hotseat. This departure from the traditional title of manager is seen as a reflection of the evolving nature of football management, aligning with the trend seen in other top clubs.

This change is part of a broader restructuring at Liverpool prompted by Klopp’s departure, as well as the exit of sporting director Jorg Schmadtke and other key coaching staff members. Fenway Sports Group’s move towards a multi-club model has led to the appointment of new figures, including Michael Edwards as chief of football and Julian Ward as technical director.

Liverpool’s decision to designate Slot as head coach is based on the belief that it better reflects the extensive support structure around the role, allowing him to focus on the core responsibilities of working with the first team. Slot, with previous coaching experience in Holland with Cambur, AZ Alkmaar, and Feyenoord, will have full authority over the squad as the undisputed leader of the first team.
