Liverpool’s transfer updates indicate that discussions worth $76 million are on the verge of commencing, with reports suggesting that initial contact has already been established with Benfica.

There are a few obvious areas to focus on in terms of strengthening the team.

Liverpool.com provides its assessment of the transfer rumors surrounding the Reds today. We begin with a highly-rated center-back, although expensive, and there’s also news regarding interest in a South American midfielder.

Antonio Silva (Benfica)

Liverpool has long been linked with Benfica’s rising star, Antonio Silva, as they seek to bolster their defensive options this summer. According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha (via Paisley Gates), Liverpool, along with Manchester United and Arsenal, are eyeing the talented defender.

Real Madrid and PSG are also reportedly interested in Silva, but Liverpool has reportedly initiated contact and is taking steps toward securing a deal.

According to the report, Silva will be permitted to leave Benfica this summer, but only if the club receives a transfer fee equivalent to what Liverpool paid for Portuguese player Darwin Nunez, who is valued at $109 million (£85 million/€100 million).

Liverpool.com notes that while Liverpool is unlikely to consider paying such a hefty sum for the 20-year-old Silva, clubs in Portugal often agree to transfer deals below the players’ release clauses (as seen with Luis Diaz, for example). If Liverpool could negotiate a discounted price, it might be worthwhile, but otherwise, they may find better value elsewhere.

Alan Varela (FC Porto)

The new Liverpool home shirt for the 2024/2025 season, featuring a chrome yellow pattern design inspired by the legendary ’84 home shirt, is now available for purchase. This design commemorates the season when the Reds became European Champions for the fourth time in Rome and the first English club to win a treble of major honors.
