SVG powers past Hill for consecutive Xfinity wins at Sonoma

Both drivers acknowledged the intense racing, marking the second time this season they’ve clashed while vying for the lead on a road course. At Circuit of The Americas, their battle for the win on the final lap resulted in NASCAR Cup Series regular Kyle Larson overtaking them both for the victory.

“What a race – it was a rollercoaster all day,” said van Gisbergen, who celebrated his win, as he did in Portland, by signing a rugby ball and kicking it into the grandstands. “That last restart, I gave it everything. Two guys going for the same space collided. It was pretty awesome and a lot of fun. Hope everyone enjoyed the show. Great back-to-back weeks for us.”

Hill, who led 21 laps and finished fifth in the No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, was unhappy with the contact but chose to take the high road. “I’ll leave it to the keyboard warriors to figure out what happened,” said Hill, watching the replay on the big screen. “No matter what I say, it’ll be wrong. I’m not going to comment further. We had good hard racing, held off SVG for a while, had a caution, and it was tough on the restart. But we had a good points day and finished in the top five. You can’t ask for more than that.”

Sheldon Creed of Joe Gibbs Racing finished second to van Gisbergen, marking his ninth career second-place finish and second of the 2024 season. Sam Mayer of JR Motorsports finished third, with Jordan Anderson Racing rookie Austin Green in fourth and Hill rounding out the top five.

This was Green’s second top-10 finish in three career starts, an impressive feat for the 23-year-old recent college graduate who started 22nd.
