DETROIT: On Sunday, the Tigers sent right-hand reliever Tyler Owens and catching prospect Liam Hicks to the Rangers in exchange for Carson Kelly, a catcher. This marked the beginning of what could be a busy Trade Deadline season for the team. The acquisition gives the Rangers, the reigning World Series champions, an experienced catcher to back up Jonah Heim. Additionally, it makes room for Dillon Dingler, the top catching prospect for the Tigers, to go to Detroit. On Monday, he is anticipated to be promoted from Triple-A Toledo to make his Major League debut. After Kelly was released by the Diamondbacks in August of last year, the Tigers signed him with the intention of working with him to improve both at bat and behind the plate. For all parties, it could not have turned out more favorably. Kelly changed the way he caught the ball to a changed his swing in the offseason after improving as a receiver with a one-knee setup late in the previous campaign. While splitting time behind the plate with Jake Rogers, Kelly eventually established himself as a middle-of-the-order run producer in Detroit’s lineup, albeit it took some time for the latter to pay off. In his rebound season, he took over as old Cardinals colleague Jack Flaherty’s primary catcher.
